Our rankings are editorial. An editor weighs the criteria below and orders each list by overall recommendation for a typical homeowner or building owner in that city. It is not a mechanical sort by any single metric — years in business, ratings or certifications — so a younger, well-credentialed company can appear above an older one. Close calls are a judgement call, and we say so.
Longevity matters: companies that have weathered decades of local storms, warranty claims and economic cycles have demonstrated staying power. We verify founding dates and years of continuous operation and weigh them alongside the other criteria — a younger company with strong credentials and a clean record can rank above an older one.
Top shingle and membrane manufacturers (GAF, CertainTeed, Owens Corning and others) certify contractors who meet training, insurance and workmanship standards — and these certifications often unlock stronger warranties for homeowners. Designations such as GAF Master Elite are held by a small fraction of contractors nationwide.
Where a verified Better Business Bureau profile exists, we factor in accreditation status, letter rating and complaint history. When a rating cannot be independently verified, we do not assign one — we mark the company as simply “Listed.”
We note whether a contractor handles residential, commercial, repair, replacement and the specific roof systems common in that city — and we surface genuine specialties (copper work, flat-roof membranes, metal, tile, storm/hail restoration) so you can match a roofer to your actual project.
We confirm each company actively serves the city in question and consider the consistency of its public reputation. Local knowledge — of climate, building codes and permitting — matters as much as craftsmanship.
